Neurodivergent users face real barriers online that standard accessibility checks miss. Learn how designing for clarity and focus helps everyone.

When we talk about digital accessibility, our minds often go to screen readers, keyboard navigation, and captioning — tangible, testable accommodations that address physical or sensory disabilities. But there’s a whole category of users who face different, less visible barriers: neurodivergent users.

First, let’s define what we mean — neurodivergence refers to natural variations in how people think, process information, and interact with the world. It includes conditions like autism, ADHD, and dyslexia — cognitive conditions that, at times, aren’t always considered disabilities in the traditional sense.

But they are disabilities. And, they often introduce real challenges when navigating digital spaces.

Unfortunately, unlike more visible impairments, neurodivergent needs aren’t easy to test for. They’re often overlooked in traditional accessibility checks despite being just as critical to creating inclusive experiences.

So, how do we address neurodivergence on our websites?

How neurodivergence connects to accessibility.

The standard guidelines for web accessibility — literally called the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, or WCAG — focus on what we have traditionally identified as physical disabilities and access: vision, hearing, fine motor skills. And while WCAG does include some considerations for cognitive disabilities, there is a gap when it comes to the lived experience of many neurodivergent users.

There’s a reason for this: neurodivergence isn’t easily tested. We can objectively test whether a color pattern is low contrast, or if a screen reader can read the alternative text assigned to an image, but we cannot objectively test whether something is “too busy” or “unclear.”

This means neurodivergent allowances are less of a defined ruleset and more of a subjective design practice. There’s no easy right or wrong answer.

Let’s look at a few practical examples where neurodivergent needs intersect with accessible design:

  • Clarity and Consistency — Cognitive load is a real issue. Neurodivergent users benefit from clear instructions, consistent layouts, and logical content structures. Confusing navigation or inconsistent labels can quickly lead to frustration.
  • Flexible Interaction — Rigid workflows and unexpected interactions (such as timed forms or popups) can be disruptive. Providing options to pause, extend, or adjust interactive elements helps users stay in control.
  • Reducing Sensory Overload — Too much motion, color, or dense content can overwhelm users with autism or sensory sensitivities. Use animation carefully, introduce whitespace, and keep interfaces clean.
  • Support for Reading and Focus — Dyslexic users benefit from legible fonts, clear headings, and adjustable text settings. Breaking up long blocks of content and avoiding justified text can also help.
  • Helpful Feedback — Unclear error messages and form fields can confuse users who process information literally. Labels should be direct, and error messaging should guide the user toward resolution.

Does any of this sound familiar? As with nearly every element of accessibility, the considerations and solutions are not specialized and hyperfocused on an individual disability. They are simply the things we do to make things clear and understandable. We might consider each of these allowances as they relate to those with neurodivergent needs, but each of them are also core principles of design as a whole. Clarity leads to a cleaner and more welcome design. Simple language leads to improvements in localization and translation. Breaking up long blocks of content makes things easier to read FOR EVERYONE!

What’s important here is that these design choices don’t just help neurodivergent users — they improve the experience for everyone. That’s the core of inclusive design.

So, what do we do next?

Too often, accessibility testing and research is focused on how to pass the guidelines. But accessibility must go beyond compliance.

For neurodivergent users, that means recognizing and designing for cognitive differences, even when they’re harder to measure. Start by including neurodivergent voices in user research. Educate your teams on cognitive accessibility. Prioritize clarity and flexibility in content and design.
