Joe Kepley

Director of Development

Proficient front-end and stack developer: both LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) and Microsoft (SQL Server, ASP.Net, ASP.Net MVC and EPiServer).

What that job title means

I’m responsible for Blend’s web development efforts, for making sure that we’re constantly improving our skills and approaches, and sharing what we learn.

Relevant background and expertise

I’ve been coding since elementary school, and doing web development since 1995. I’ve had several web-related professional positions, but the most formative were managing the web presence of a large credit card, and developing the web site for an NFL team.

Education and certifications

Attended Dakota State University, Computer Science and Art. eZ Publish Certified Developer.

Conferences attended

Essential professional-related books

On the development side, Douglas Crockford’s Javascript: The Good Parts really changed my approach to front-end web development.

Other organizations

I’m active at my church and in the Cub Scouts, and attend some of the meetups of the Sioux Falls Content Strategy group.

Favorite movie

I like a lot of movies. Probably a geek cliché, but The Matrix still holds up as one of my favorites. Too bad they never made any sequels. ಠ_ಠ

The trend that will transform the Web within the next 5 years

I think mobile and the technologies surrounding it are in the process of changing not just the Internet, but modern life in general. We’re rapidly moving towards a point where people use the web more often from their cell phone than they do from a computer.

Childhood aspiration

I was pretty sold on astronaut all through elementary school.

Guilty pleasure

I love sushi, and will usually grab a lunch at a sushi place every other week or so. I never get the time any more, but I’ll occasionally spend an hour on the weekend playing a video game.
